About Ayurveda

In the Sanskrit language, Ayush means "life" and Veda means "science".  Ayurveda therefore means the “Science of Living”.  Origins of Ayurveda in India can be traced back to at least 5,000 years.  It is the source of Tibetan, traditional Chinese, and Greek medicines which were all ancestors of modern Western medicine.

The Three doshas and Five elements

The Three doshas and Five elementsAyurvedic theory outlines the importance of the five great elements and three doshas.  The elements; ether, air, fire, water and earth; form all gross matter in the universe.  The three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha are simply combinations of these elements and are present in everything and everyone in different degrees. Each element has its own unique chemical and physical composition consisting of properties.  Therefore each dosha is made up of these unique properties reflecting its elemental makeup.  At birth, each person has a constitution containing a unique balance of these doshas making up that person’s Prakruti. Your Prakruti is, simply put, who you are mentally, spiritually, and emotionally based on the predominance of one or more doshas in you.  Classic Ayurveda says all beings are broadly classified into seven mind-body types: single dosha predominance (Vatta, Pitta, or Kapha), dual doshic (Vata-Pitta, Vata-Kapha, Pitta–Kapha) and tri–doshic or almost equal in all three doshas.   The imbalanced state of the doshas that gives rise to disease is known as Vikruti.  The majority of us are in varying Vikruti stages as a result of straying from our natural intelligence and awareness through faulty lifestyles, diets and routines.

The Ayurvedic journey is a conscious effort to naturally balance your unique constitution through time-tested principles of right living. Ayurveda says keeping a healthy equilibrium of the three doshas will lead you to a harmonious state of mind, body and spirit.

The Ayurvedic Approach

The goal of Ayurvedic treatments is to bring the doshas into balance by customizing lifestyle habits, diet, and Ayurvedic treatments for each person.  No two people are alike in their elemental makeup and for that reason no two Ayurvedic treatments are alike.  Wake up to a world of self discovery, beauty, and energy through the simple yet profound techniques of Ayurveda.
