Kapha

Kapha is composed of earth and water. Kapha structures and functions derive from these elements and have the qualities: heavy, cold, moist, static, soft, oily, and smooth.  Anatomically, it is seated in the upper part of the stomach.  In the body, framework and foundation come from Kapha.  It also provides most of the lubrication in the body and is heavily involved in the immune system.  In the mind, Kapha is responsible for emotions such as love, devotion, and forgiveness.  Kapha imbalances can therefore affect these qualities in both the body and mind.

Kaphas have a large body frame and are sturdier than the other body types. They tend to have thick, lustrous hair and wide, large eyes. They have a great amount of strength and are able to withstand illnesses.  They have slow digestion and enjoy relaxing.  Kapha type people work at a slow, steady pace and make excellent assistants. Kaphas have great memories and will complete all tasks that they are assigned.  Mentally they are calm, patient and affectionate.

When Kapha qualities have increased in a person they may become lethargic and gain weight easily.  They will become congested and have sluggish digestion.  Depression and attachment can occur as Kapha becomes excessive in the mind.  Following a Kapha-balancing diet and lifestyle can help restore balance in these areas.
